Mental Health and the LGBTQ Community

The LGBTQ Community has experienced its own unique challenges and traumatic events. Being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Pansexual, Polysexual, Gender-Fluid/Non-Binary, or Unsure, presents its own very special set of challenges and life experiences that can have a wide variety of effects on those in the community.

It is many of these unique challenges and events that can have such a profound effect on LGBTQ lives in the present. Events such as coming out, living in a heteronormative and cisgender culture, and rejection or discrimination are just a few of the very unique experiences that the LGBTQ community has to face continuously, and affects us more than we may sometimes like to believe. Many members of the LGBTQ community may fear seeking out counseling because of the fear of working with a non-affirming counselor, or one that does not fully understand all the intricacies of our community.

You may fall anywhere along the many spectrums of sex, gender identity and expression, romantic and sexual interest, and other spectrums. Being a part of the LGBTQ community, you may want a counselor who not only understands the unique challenges you face, but also provides treatment that directly faces these challenges and focuses on healing from these and other life experiences.
